Biography

I am Professor of Museum Studies and a curator and writer specialising in contemporary art at the intersection of digital creativity, technology and science. In the last 25 years I have curated and co-curated over 50 international exhibitions worldwide, many involving new commissions from visual artists working with new technology.

Since 2023 I have held a WASP-HS guest professorship in Art and AI at Umeå University in Sweden working with Bildmuseet and UmArts. I curated the exhibition Alexandra Daisy Ginsberg / Machine Auguries for Bildmuseet in 2024, commissioning a new site-specific edition in the series of works recreating a dawn chorus using AI which I first co-commissioned for Somerset House in 2019.

I am a member of the jury for the Human AI Art Award (Kunstmuseum Bonn and Deutsche Telekom) and an advisory board member for BRAID, the UKRI funded UK-wide programme dedicated to integrating Arts and Humanities research more fully into the Responsible AI ecosystem.

In 2021-2022 I held a senior academic fellowship at Tate as part of the Mellon-funded project Reshaping the Collectible: When Artworks Live in the Museum, where I worked on the year-long display at Tate Britain The Lives of Artworks and on the case study about the lives of net art.

Until 2019 I was a curator for NEoN (NorthEast of North), Scotland’s only digital art festival and was founder/curator of LifeSpace Science Art Research Gallery in the School of Life Sciences, University of Dundee (2013-2018) helping the School to win a Gold Award from the National Coordinating Centre for Public Engagement Excellence.

Research interests

My research addresses information-based art, AI, art and science collaborations, curatorial practice and the history of digital art, media art, net art, and conceptual art, especially where it bumps up against the museum and traditional exhibition structures. I was trained in the philosophy of science and technology and this grounding underpins my curatorial practice research.

I am currently curating a large-scale exhibition about agency in relation to AI systems, commissioning artists to create new works that critically reflect on our human capacity to act with and against automation and the extractivist logics of technology development (opening March 2026 at Bildmuseet, Umeå). This builds on previous practice research concerning AI systems and the problems of categorisation and of outsourcing labour, found in my curatorial project The Gig is Up! at V2_ Institute for Unstable Media in Rotterdam in 2016, and even further back, the exhibition Database Imaginary co-curated in 2004 which toured across Canada.

I have curated over 50 exhibitions in the last 25 years including a major project and publication about digital technology, attentiveness, and our non-stop world inspired by Jonathan Crary's book of the same name, 24/7 (Somerset House, London, 2019).

My curatorial work includes initiating and supporting collaborations between artists and scientists, including most recently the work of UK-based artists Semiconductor to work with the Extreme Light Group at the Advanced Research Centre on quantum technology applications.

Supervision

I am interested in supervising projects which employ practice research to address questions in the fields of museum studies, curatorial studies, science and technology studies (STS), or information studies with a focus on contemporary art, digital/electronic media, information-based art, science-art including quantum, and AI-driven or generative/ systems art. Current PhD research projects under my supervision range across cultural heritage, the archives of festivals, and documentation methods, but are linked by methodologies which situate the practitioner at the heart of the enquiry.

Valuing festivals as incubators of digital creativity

Prior to joining the University of Glasgow, my PhD supervision successes included a number of practice research projects with a focus on curating digital or new media art: performance in the eternal network (Roddy Hunter, 2019); the preservation of net.art (Karin de Wild, 2019); spatial considerations of curating online and offline (Alejandro Ball, 2019; Marialaura Ghidini, 2015); models of institutional curatorial practice (Krezmien Barkley, 2014, with FACT Liverpool); and open-source and database-driven art (Graham Harwood, 2012; Dominic Smith, 2011).

I have examined PhDs on topics as diverse as networked images, detritus and the internet, synthetic biology, pervasive media, and authenticity in the conservation of contemporary art.

I lecture and supervise dissertations across Digital Media and Information Studies (UG) and Museum Studies (PGT) and regularly give guest lectures on other programmes including the MLitt in Curatorial Practice at the Glasgow School of Art delivered jointly with History of Art.

I have greatly enjoyed hosting students on the undergraduate placement scheme to work with cultural partners including festivals and artist-run centres supporting digital art.

At the University of Glasgow I have held administrative roles including Head of Information Studies, Theme lead for Creative Economies and Cultural Transformations in the Advanced Research Centre, and School of Humanities Public Engagement and Impact Convenor.

Prior to joining Glasgow, I was a Dundee Fellow at University of Dundee (2013-2018) working from the Visual Research Centre in Dundee Contemporary Arts, linking Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and Design and the School of Life Sciences, founding and curating the programme at LifeSpace Science Art Research Gallery. I supervised PhD students undertaking practice research in curating and taught on the MFA programme in Art, Society and Publics.

From 2000-2013 I was based at the University of Sunderland where I co-founded CRUMB, the online resource for curators of media art, supervised PhD students, and taught on the MA Curating course.

I am a founding member of the editorial board of the Journal of Curatorial Studies and I co-chaired Rewire, the Fourth International Conference on the histories of media art, science and technology with FACT in Liverpool (2011) (having worked on the first conference in this now long-running series, Re:fresh!, in Banff Canada in 2005).

In 2008-2009 I was the inaugural curatorial fellow at Eyebeam Art and Technology Center in New York, where I worked with the artists in the labs to develop exhibitions of their work. This was funded by a research grant from the AHRC.

After completing my PhD in 2004, I worked as adjunct curator of new media at BALTIC Centre for Contemporary Art (also funded by the AHRC) until 2006.

I held a Leverhulme Trust Early Career fellowship from 2006 to 2008.

Having grown up in Canada, I have had a longstanding association with The Banff Centre where from 1998 to 2005 I worked as a guest curator and researcher in residence developing exhibitions, summits, residencies and publications for the Walter J. Phillips Gallery, the International Curatorial Institute and what was then the Banff New Media Institute. I returned to Banff to give talks and participate in workshops in 2007, 2010, 2015 and 2025 (as a Fleck Fellow).

I hold a BA(Hons) from The University of King's College Contemporary Studies programme, a Masters degree from CCS at Bard, and a PhD from the University of Sunderland (2004).

As a masters student in curatorial studies my summer internship was at The National Gallery of Canada where I co-curated an exhibition of the Art Metropole Collection; I returned there on a research fellowship (art after 1970) based in the library, investigating media art exhibition histories as part of my PhD.

Following my MA and before starting my PhD I spent a year as a curatorial research intern at The Walker Art Center in Minneapolis, where I worked on exhibitions of the work of Lorna Simpson, Andy Warhol, Yayoi Kusama and Matthew Barney as well as the reinstallation of the permanent collection.
