Biography
Andrew Smith is Professor of Clinical Bacteriology & Honorary Consultant Microbiologist for NHS Greater Glasgow & Clyde. He is the Director of the Bacterial Respiratory Infections Service, Scottish Microbiology Reference Laboratory (SMiRL), Glasgow Royal Infirmary and Lead Consultant for Oral and Maxillofacial Microbiology, NHS GG&C.
Previously, he has been the Microbiology Consultant Lead for Medical Device Decontamination NHS Glasgow & Clyde (NHS GG&C) for several years sitting on National and International committees. The lead for several National projects, grant funding and peer reviewed publications linked to decontamination in Primary and Secondary Care with the objective of reducing the risk of iatrogenic vCJD. A committee member of the CJD support network.
He is the current President of the Scottish Microbiology Association (http://www.sma.scot.nhs.uk) and Assistant editor of the Journal of Hospital Infection (http://jhiblogger.wordpress.com). Professor Smith is the current chair of the Scottish Antimicrobial Stewardship in Dentistry group (https://www.sapg.scot/about-us/current-projects/)
Research interests
Professor Smith leads a team of scientists and biomedical support workers within the NHS providing service, research and development linked to the following respiratory pathogens such as;
- Haemophilus influenzae
- Legionella pneumophila
- Streptococcus pneumonia
- Neisseria meningitidis
- Streptococcus pyogenes
- Bordetella pertussis
We also have a programme investigating the epidemiology and microbiology of severe odontogenic infections which links to the Dental Scottish Antimicrobial Prescribing Group.
Current research and development programmes
1. Lead PI (with Dr Claire Cameron, HPS) for the Scottish arm of the “Be on the TEAM- teenagers against meningitis” study aims: “Does the MenB vaccine reduce pharyngeal carriage of meningococci?”. Multi-centre UK study. Lead Investigator, Dr Matthew Snape, Oxford Vaccines Group.
2. Introducing real-time Whole Genome Sequencing for the Scottish Bacterial Respiratory Infections Service (excluding TB). Co-ordination of the Reference Laboratory service based on Level 5, New Lister Building, Glasgow Royal Infirmary in collaboration with Health Protection Scotland teams.

Teaching
We have one of the best courses Internationally for teaching undergraduates decontamination sciences and infection prevention and control (IP&C) with a unique and dedicated teaching laboratory suite. Professor Smith is the only Clinical Microbiologist to have passed the UK Advanced Course in Sterilization Technology (ACIST). The teaching is based on our previous research programmes on medical device decontamination which has been widely published and quoted, for example, work by a prior departmental PhD student Dr Sandra Winter has demonstrated that a frequently used steam sterilizer in general dental practice fails to sterilise dental handpieces (Winter S, et al Failure of non-vacuum steam sterilization processes for dental handpieces. Journal of Hospital Infection 2017: 97(4): 343-347). We use this evidence based approach to underpin our teaching curriculum which is led and delivered by;
Lynne Cotter (Infection Prevention and Control)
And
Stuart Smith (Decontamination Sciences)
