Research interests

Soon after joining Glasgow University in 1987, I developed a lasting interest in researching (and at times teaching) the theories of the learning and teaching process (LTP), and particularly those which apply across disciplines and so demonstrate general principles. Equally I am interested in the counterpart to theories: the "engineering" or applied side of LTP research embodied in transferable learning and teaching designs, such as Mazur's Peer Instruction, Aronson's Jigsaw Classroom design, and the Patchwork Text design. The latter might possibly be appropriate to PGT programmes, using fixed membership groups so that they get to use their accumulating knowledge of the work of others in their group).

Related to this, I have an even longer standing interest in peer interaction as a major and distinctive mode of learning, and is a widely under-rated function of education. This dates from Miyake's 1986 paper "Constructive interaction" which showed that two people discussing a common problem of understanding construct new understandings catalysed by each other's utterances: and do not merely pool bits of partial knowledge. Peer interaction can be fundamentally more productive than that view of learning as mere sharing. Chi later showed in careful experiments how different protocols for peer learning lead to predictably greater or lesser learning gains: another interesting topic within this field.

In contrast I am equally interested in Dave Wood's work on "contingent tutoring" which grew out of Vygotsky's work, and which claims that when an expert and a novice interact, there is a specific procedure (which humans are rather bad at) for optimal actions by the teacher, leading to optimal learning by the novice.

I also have active interests in Mindfulness, Positive Psychology, and "Green Space" -- the widely proven yet little understood wellbeing effects of being in green spaces and/or "blue spaces" (beside or in water).

Extensive personal website, much of it on learning and teaching research
